As the pandemic slowly calms down, Puerto Rico continues to see an ever-growing crop of new talents who can’t wait to put their art out there. One of the artists to come out of said situation is Alejandro Betancourt who recently released the EP mediodia, a beat tape that displays his love of instrumental hip hop. mediodia starts with “contigo (intro)”, an instrumental that features some beautiful piano and bass work before delving into boom bap. Afterwards, “hayabusa” is a piano and atmosphere-driven lo-fi beat that’ll play well in many playlists. Then “girasol” is a mix of southern hip hop with psychedelic elements and a car sample in the back that’ll have listeners going through different experiences. Next “southpaw” is a more gangsta rap inspired tune that shows the beatmaker’s 90s influences. Finally, “perdidos (bonus track)” is a relaxing tune that mixes electronica, jazz, and lo-fi elements to create a sound that’ll have people moving their bodies.
In closure, Alejandro Betancourt’s mediodia is a short but interesting beat tape that shows off a taste of the young musician’s sound and the exploration he’s willing to do to grow as an artist, producer and beatmaker.
