Despite the many difficulties set by the COVID-19 pandemic, Puerto Rico’s underground rock scene has continued to strive with groups staying together to deliver new projects while new bands forming to show off what they got as well. One of the latest ensembles to form is Costras, a punk outfit that performed live in many venues before delivering their first project, Demo. Demo starts with “$7.25”, a raw look at the living wage the average Puerto Rican works for every day just to get by and how many across the island have rebelled against it. Afterwards, “No Sé Qué Hacer” is a melodic hardcore track that displays the band’s growing sound in a track that explores relationships and how they can crumble down. Then, “Somos Costra” serves as a mosh pit hardcore record that serves as presentation of the group and how they’re people living their own lives without the interference of others. Next, “Mátame” displays the ensemble’s willingness to explore heavier sides of hardcore in a song that explores heartbreak and suicide. Lastly, “Quiero Vivir” is a fantastic blend of the various sounds explored across the project in another presentation of the band’s ability to create music for the mosh pit. In brief, Costras’s Demo is a great presentation letter from a band that is slowly finding its sound and space in a scene that continues to survive despite the many circumstances that try to take it down.
