As the Puerto Rican metal scene looks to reinvent itself and stay afoot in an island where such a heavy sound is often looked upon, young bands like Out of Hand emerge out of the trenches to inject new ideas to the scene they’ve admired for so long and with their debut EP, Icons of Apathy, they also manage to present themselves as one of the original and more powerful voices coming out. (cover for the EP) Icons of Apathy kicks off with “Presage,” a powerful thrash metal and extreme metal blend that will blow listeners away. Then the project seamlessly transitions to the single “Three Way Knife,” an extreme metal and grindcore crossover, which will have everybody headbanging madly. Afterwards, “Harvester of Sins” comes in with more of the power presented in the previous tracks, but with a bit of a slower rhythm in order to calm down the audience. However, Out of Hand speed things up a bit in the following tune, “Clenched Fists,” a song that mixes elements of thrash metal, grindcore and crossover thrash in order to create some fantastic moshpit atmosphere. Finally, Icons of Apathy ends with “Violent Thinking,” a reflective thrash metal and extreme metal mixture that perfectly encapsulates the EP’s essence. (picture of the band as found on their Facebook) With Icons of Apathy, Out of Hand manage to introduce themselves as a force to be reckoned with inside the Puerto Rican metal scene while also displaying their potential to be a group that goes beyond the boundaries of the standard Puerto Rican metal band.
