"Drunk and Stupid Mixtape": Mettaur Takes You on a Lo-fi Psychedelic Adventure Across the Night8/26/2018 As the indie music scene in Puerto Rico continues to grow, artists experiment with different sounds and ways to record every day. One of the many musicians to do so is Mettaur as he presents in his short EP the “Drunk and Stupid Mixtape,” a lo-fi recording that takes you on a psychedelic trip across a night between friends. (cover art for the project) Starting the project with “Pillow Talk,” Mettaur provides listeners a perfect example to the type of project they are about to get into. The tune is a a lo-fi pop punk influenced acoustic song that slowly transitions into psychedelic territory. Afterwards, one is treated to “Let’s be alcoholics,” an acoustic pop punk track with math rock and 8-Bit music influences. Then the project presents “The Nile is not just a river,” the longest and perhaps more experimental track in the EP as it mixes garage rock and acoustic lo-fi pop punk with distorted vocals. Finally, the “Drunk and Stupid Mixtape” ends with “For all time,” a short blend of lo-fi acoustic and wind instruments fused with psychedelic keyboards. (picture of the artist as found on Bandcamp) In sum, Mettaur’s “Drunk and Stupid Mixtape” is an interesting experiment that feels like a trip across the astral planes between the magical doors found in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. If you are looking for something different, then this project is definitely for you.
