As Puerto Rico’s indie music scene continues to grow more genres are getting the chance to get recorded. Among the many sounds getting light are psychedelia inspired projects like Fantasmes and Epilogio, crossover thrash groups like Fullminator, and other more experimental bands like Z X Siempre and Doktor Zaius. One of the many ensembles to bring some of these more underground sounds to the forefront is the pop punk inspired Late Night Drive who, with their latest album Bloom, make sure to let this sub-genre flourish. (cover art for the project) Late Night Drive’s first project is completely filled with pop punk. From the very start of the first song, “Bouquet,” to the last one in “Bloom,” the album is a tribute to that sound that dominated the late 1990s and early to mid 2000s mixed with a bit of the melodic hardcore and emo pop rock that reached its peak in the same era. Songs like “Nimbus” and “Running” demonstrate said influences showing how, if given the opportunity, Late Night Drive would have been a good addition to any future festival that takes a shape like that of the Vans Warped Tour. In addition to the familiar sound, the band also write about similar themes explored in the genre such as love, growing up and identity, e.g. tunes like “Running,” “Bloom” and “Exeunt.” Overall, Late Night Drive’s Bloom is a nice presentation of pop punk that explores topics usually found within the genre. Moreover, the group show that the sound has potential for exploration. Hopefully, the ensemble’s future projects continue to show growth and other themes being considered in the lyrical content.
